Tensho Koshirae
(Tensho Era 1573-1592)
These swords made from the Azuchi Momoyama Era of the Tensho period, are called "Tensho Koshirae". Prior to this time they were called " Uchigatana Koshirae." They were made for practical use and they were very strong and simplistic.
The head of the hilt made of buffalo horn which is characteristic of the "Tensho Koshirae."
Their is a good example of a "Tensho Koshirae" at Toshu-gu in Nikko. The sword was owned by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
